The main source of Vitamin D is the sun. If the sun is exposed to UVB radiation, the cholesterol in the skin is converted into Vitamin D3. The formation occurs in the skin from cholesterol. The sun's rays must be strong, and the skin must be directly exposed to our bodies producing enough natural vitamin D3. That is why it is called the sunshine vitamin.
Vitamin D plays an important part in many of the bodys essential functions. Below we have listed the most important:
Vitamin D is needed for normal growth and development of bone in children and contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Because of that it is recommended to support your child with extra Vitamin D from 0-4 years old. It is also recommended for pregnant women to take Vitamin D during their pregnancy.
This combination is especially relevant if you wish to support your bone health. Furthermore it is a great supplement to support your daily intake of Vitamin D and Vitamin K.
Vitamin D is essential for the body as it promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the intestine, as well as the deposition of minerals in bones and teeth. Due to its properties, vitamin D is particularly important for infants and during pregnancy, as it is essential for the child's bone development, teeth, and the mother's bones. Vitamin D exists in many different forms, with 37 active substances discovered so far, each varying in their chemical structure. The most significant for the human body are D2 and D3, with D3 being the most active form. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means that the body cannot absorb it without fat.
Vitamin D is also known as the "sunshine vitamin" because the sun is one of the most important sources of vitamin D. Sunlight consists of light with various wavelengths, and the sun's UVB and UVA radiation are of the greatest relevance to humans. When our skin is exposed to UVB radiation, cholesterol in the skin's surface is converted into D3 vitamin, with fair skin absorbing more vitamin D than dark skin. The amount of vitamin D absorbed by the skin from sunlight is stored in the liver and kidneys over the following 48 hours, unless the body has been washed with soap or chlorinated water, such as from a pool.
However, vitamin D from sunlight is only produced when the sun is high enough in the sky, as UVB cannot penetrate the atmosphere otherwise. In Scandinavia, there is enough D3 vitamin produced in the skin through sunlight only during the height of summer, and if one is covered, uses sunscreen, or has dark skin (higher pigment), the absorption of D3 vitamin is inhibited, leading to an increased need for vitamin D supplements.
Additionally, vitamin D can be found in foods like fatty saltwater fish, fish liver oil, cheese, and other fatty dairy products, as well as egg yolks, avocados, and vegetable oils. But the amount of vitamin D absorbed through the diet is insufficient to meet the body's needs.
Vitamin K belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins. This means that the vitamin must dissolve in fat during digestion to be absorbed into the body. Vitamin K exists in three forms. Vitamin K1, which is called phytomenadione. This form is found in green plants and rich sources include: cabbage, broccoli, spinach and avocado. The other form is, vitamin K2, is formed in intestinal bacteria and is called menaquinone. The third and last form is a synthetic form of vitamin K, which is not recommended for use as a supplement. Vitamin K contributes to normal blood coagulation and maintenance of normal bones.
Dosage: 1 capsule per day - preferably with a meal.
N.B. Taking vitamin D is not recommended if you suffer from hypercalcemia (too high calcium concentration in the blood)
