WHAT IS VITAMIN D?

Vitamin D is not really a vitamin in the traditional sense, because we are able to form it through the skin, once our skin is exposed to UV-B rays from the sun.The formation occurs in the skin from cholesterol. The suns rays have to be strong and the skin has to be directly exposed in order for our bodies to form enough natural vitamin D3 - also referred to as the sunshine vitamin.

Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, normal blood calcium levels and to the maintenance of normal muscle function. Vitamin D contributes to normal absorption/utilization of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin D has a role in the process of cell division.

Vitamin D is needed for normal growth and development of bone in children and contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

Vitamin K belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins. This means that the vitamin must dissolve in fat during digestion to be absorbed into the body or it will directly smoke back. Vitamin k contributes to normal blood clotting and the maintenance of normal bones.

The main source of Vitamin D is the sun. If the sun is exposed to UVB radiation, the cholesterol in the skin is converted into Vitamin D3. Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the intestine and ensures the deposition of these minerals into the bones and teeth. Vitamin D is necessary for our bones and is important in the prevention of bone loss. Vitamin D is particularly important for infants and pregnant women, as it is essential for the child's bone and teeth development as well as the mother's bones.

Vitamin K belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins. This means that the vitamin must dissolve in fat during digestion to be absorbed into the body or it will directly smoke back. Vitamin K is available in three forms. Vitamin K1, which is called phytomenadion. This form is found in green plants and rich sources include: cabbage, broccoli, spinach and avocado. The other form, vitamin K2, is formed in intestinal bacteria and is called menakinon.  Vitamin k contributes to normal blood clotting and the maintenance of normal bones.
