WHAT IS ASHWAGANDHA?

For thousands of years, people have been using the root and the orange-red berries of the ashwagandha plant for medical purposes. The popular herb also goes under the name Indian Ginseng and Winter Cherry. The plant mainly grows in India, The Middle East, and parts of Africa.

The name “ashwagandha” is related to the root’s smell, which means “like a horse”. Per definition, the meaning of “Ashwa” is "horse" and “Gandha” is "smell".

AYURVEDIC MEDICINE?

Ashwagandha is an important herb in Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic medicine (“in short” Ayurveda) is one of the world’s oldest approaches towards holistic health. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India. In the present day, it plays great importance in the world of alternative health.

In Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is considered a Rasayana. Based on this belief, it means helping the body and mind to stay in balance.

ADAPTOGEN?

Ashwagandha is considered an “adaptogen”. Adaptogens are herbs that are considered to create balance and adapt to the body’s needs.

Some of the most popular adaptogens are Ashwagandha, Holy Basil, Asian Ginger, Schisandra, Reishi mushroom and Ginseng. These plants are very often used in Chinese or Ayurvedic holistic medicine and treatments.
