WHAT IS ASTAXANTHIN?
Astaxanthin is an antioxidant, Astaxanthin is related to the antioxidant Betacarotene. In nature, Astaxanthin is found in a wide variety of living organisms. The primary source is the microalgae haematococcus pluvialis, which grows in everything from the warm waters to the icy Arctic Ocean. Astaxanthin is the substance that gives salmon, shrimp and crisp the great red color.
When compared to other antioxidants, Astaxanthin proves to be a particularly potent antioxidant. People do not form astaxanthin themselves, and like many other carotenoids, they must be supplemented with diet - or as a supplement.
Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant whose function is to protect our cells from oxidation. Astaxanthin is naturally optimized to "absorb" oxidative radicals. Compared to other antioxidants, Astaxanthin has been found to be up to several hundred times as effective.
Astaxanthin ia a naturally occuring carotenoid with a unique structure that is known to be a potent free radical scavenger. Because Astaxanthin freely crosses the blood-brain and blood-retina barriers, it can neutralize free radicals in the eye and central nervous system.
